Digital Editing

Digital editing and photography are ideal for those of us who like to process their pictures instantly. The great reward of digital editing is you can see your mistakes instantly and are able to correct them.

Burning CDs offers an organized method for storing photographs. You can save the all of the photos from a specific event to a single CD. Alternatively, photos of the same subject taken at different times can also all be burned onto a single CD. As digital technology has improved, several types of digital editing software, scanning software and high-quality photo printers have become available to the consumer.

The Right Tools for the Job
One of the most important things to remember when using photo editing software is to make sure that it is compatible with your operating system. Digital photographs saved as .PNG files are large files that can exactly reproduce the original image but require a lot of memory. However, if the files are saved as .JPEG files, they can be saved as smaller files but lose some of the resolution and detail that was apparent in the original.

Scanning and printing your own pictures at home requires a high-resolution scanner and printer. Photographic quality printers should have a resolution of at least 1200 x 1200 DPI (dots per inch).

Scanners and Scanning Software
Scanners copy photographs or negatives as computer images. Scanning software programs like Epson Twain and HP PhotoSmart allow users to manipulate the resolution of the photograph being scanned. The greater the resolution, the more detail in the photo. Digital EditingScanners measure resolution in PPI or pixels per square inch. The greater the number of pixels per square inch, the greater the resolution. Yet, these also tend to be larger digital files. Such larger files can be saved as TIFF, PNG or BMP files with scanning software and transferred to digital editing software.

Tricks of the Trade
Digital editing software programs are designed to operate on high-resolution photograph files. Several photo editing software packages are on the market now. The two most popular are Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Digital Image 9.0. Many digital cameras are sold with photo editing software. Several functions are available in photo editing software. Photographs can be changed from color to black and white mode. Contrast, brightness and colors themselves can also be adjusted throughout the entire photograph or in selected parts of the photograph. Digital editing allows users to change the picture size, background or dimensions of the image. Many packages have a quick tool for removing the red eye effect caused by direct contact between the subject’s retina and the camera’s flash.

Burning CDs Versus Computer Storage
Once the photograph is successfully edited, it can be saved on the computer’s hard drive or burnt onto a CD. If your computer crashes, you could lose all of the pictures you saved on your computer. Consequently, it’s always a good idea to burn your pictures to a CD so you have a physical backup of them.

Saving photographs on your computer can require a large amount of hard drive space. By saving photographs in a JPEG file, you can reduce the size of memory necessary to save it. Yet, reducing the file size reduces the resolution. In fact, each time the JPEG file is opened, some resolution is lost.

Many people choose to burn or save their photographs on a CD. Disc burners are available for burning CDs so that large file photographs can be stored on them and viewed or edited later without losing resolution. Modern computers are often sold with a CD burner already installed, making it easy and convenient to create physical backups of your images.
