I want to upgrade from my Nikon D40X to one of these cameras: Nikon D300s, Nikon D700, Canon 7D or Canon 5D Mark II. I only have one Nikon lens and am not married to Nikon. I have read and compared ALL of the specifications of these cameras. They are all in my price range. I am mostly a Nature/Wildlife/Landscape serious amateur photography. I have also read the last 6 months of various photography magazine reviews on these cameras. I am truly lost as to what to buy because all of them have certain features that I like. Video is not required. I will not be printing beyond 12 x 18. I will be doing some HDR. I would GREATLY appreciate feedback and comments from users of these cameras.
hey!
Well I'm in a very similar situation. Got a D40x myself. Not a bad camera though eh? Man for the price we paid, we got a decent amount in features and quality compared to the D40.
Well ya know I really want to grab a new body. Mainly for the ISO:Noise ratio, but also for more focal points and better colour contrast. Well also because the sensor in the 40x doesn't really seem to be amazing for focusing.
Well there's two arguments here. You say you don't have another lens yet. Considered getting a lens first?
I've spoken to a few great photographers, and when I mention getting a new body, they always ask me what lenses I have. After telling them I have just the stock 18-55mm they always tell me to replace the lens first and then see if I want to get a new body right away. We both know the limitations with out camera, but the lens is what will make the picture in the end!
Consider grabbing a new lens first.
If you're mind is totally set on a new body no matter what, then why not go for the best? The 5D MarkII is an amazing camera. It's got a great iso range and very low noise as well. In comparison, the D700 is a great camera as well. If I were looking into bodies, I would be looking into just the 5D or the D700. Don't bother with the 300s if the 700 is an option as well. THe 300s just has the video function really to make it a lot more expensive. If you want to shoot video then get a video camera haha.
well I hope that sot of narrowed it down. Go to your local camera shop, tell them your dilemma, and rent out the 5D MarkII as well as the D700 and compare!
What are you going to do about lenses for the new camera?
ey, email me back when you figure it out. I'd love to know what you ended up picking. It would help my body selection a lot!
I am going to purchase the Nikon D300s. Through all of my extensive research and holding each camera at the store and what I shot this is the best camera for me within my budget.
