Choosing the right Lighting Set-Up and Accessories??

Hi

I’m wanting to purchase some lighting gear for portraits at home. My current equipment is a EOS 450D with 430 II Flash.

Am not sure what lighting gear to get. Either a stand for my flash with an umbrella or soft box??

Or go for continuous lighting on a stand with an umbrella or soft box??

Also looking at a 5 in 1 reflector for use indoors and on location.

Any advise on best gear for a beginner would be much appreciated (My budget is a few hundred pound).

Thanks

Craig.

If I were you, I’d stick with what you have now. It is perfectly good for indoor portraits and a lot of other things you may want to use flash for.
You will not need the power (or half of the functions for that matter) of the studio flashes for what you are doing at the moment. In fact, I think that having a small flashgun like you have at the minute would be better for you than having high-end studio lighting.

With flashguns, the great thing about them is the refresh time, it is so quick that you can just take photos without having to worry about wasting the model’s time or any body else’s for that matter.
Also, the great thing about flashguns is the fact that they run off batteries, so if you are on-location or don’t have a power supply near-by then it will be pretty hard to use studio flashes, and that is where the flashgun will be superior.

I recommend that if you want to take a lot of indoor photos or use the flashgun a lot for different things, then go for the “Interfit STR100 Strobies Portrait Kit”.
This kit includes some amazing stuff for a quite cheap price. I have been using it for some time now and it is great. The only thing you need to do before buying it, is make sure there is a Flex mount for your Canon 430EX II available, otherwise you won’t be able to attach anything onto your flash, and it will be useless. You can get the Flex mount from online, on their website or on Amazon. I’ve had a look at their website, and am pretty sure that the “SGM200″ will fit your flash, it says 430EX mark I, but you will have to make absolute sure that it will fit before buying.

I hope this helps you, and happy shooting. If you want to get things like a lighting stand, remote triggers etc. you can, and this will help you to be a little more free with your flashgun and expand your use with it.

Reposting this, Doesn’t seem to want to show the original. I don’t know why.. maybe because of the source links at the bottom.

The source links aren’t working for some reason. It is not showing my post when I put them in. Here’s the link to the Interfit Strobies Flex mount guide.

And the link to it on Amazon. Don’t know why it wouldn’t let me put them together in the same post.

Thanks for your answers Sam! Had a look at the Strobies Kit, looks great have added it to my Amazon Wish List!

Have purchased today a light stand, umbrella, off camera flash cord and a 5 in 1 reflector on a stand. Also ‘Speedliter’s Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites’, which has some great reviews.

Thanks again for your help is much appreciated!

Glad I helped ^^

I’m sorry for the duplicated answers. When I looked at the first one, after I posted.. It didn’t show. It sometimes does that with answers which have links in them, hence why there are answers with the links seperately.

Also, this website needs a way to delete answers and also for the answers to load faster, as it just looks awful now with the 5 answers.

Oh and by the way, If you live near a Jacobs Digital camera store, I would recommend going into it and asking about the Interfit Strobies kit, as the Jacobs Digital closest to me has them. Just make sure it’s the STR100 kit, not the 101 as the 100 has more attachments and you get more for your money.
