Hi, I think GIMP is probably the most widely used, or at least the one I hear most about. It\’s available to download directly from their site.

I have two free photo editing softwares that I use frequently. Picasa and Piknik. Picasa is probably my favorite.

Picasa is kind of poor mans l!ightr00m substitute which offers limited editing possibilities. I use it manage roughly 60.000 pictures and it does a great job.

Gimp is my tool to do serious editing and together mit UFRaw I can even somewhat import my .CR2 files.

With http://meetthegimp.org there is even an excellent and free video podcast to teach you how to use it.

And both programs allthough they have their limitations have the advantage that you can get them for Windows, OS-X and Linux.

The biggest disadvantage of Gimp is the lack of 16-bit support which is expected for the next major release. But if you dont know why this is a drawback, just dont mind and forget what I said.

The only advantage Photoshop has over the GIMP is the ability to do pre-press color separations. The big advantage of the GIMP over Photoshop is that it is free.

Picnik is also one, but it’s not that nice of one. You can still add cool effects though. Hope this helps!
