I’m a beginner, what DSLR camera would you suggest?

I was looking at the Olympia E-450, and although it has alot of features on it that i don’t understand, do you think i would be able to teach myself the basics from books, magazines, experience and the manual? Or do you think i should take classes? And are there any specific cameras that you would suggest? I would also like to buy a Holga as i LOVE lomography, but my current camera doesnt allow me to take the kind of pictures i yearn to. Any other information would also help. Thankyou(:

I\’m not an expert either. I went from a Canon S45 to a Canon 350D. I found it overwhelming and that I had a hard time carrying it around (lots of kid gear to haul around in addition).

I traded it in for a Canon G9 because it has many DSLR features in a fairly compact point and shoot. You can also add a lens adapter to it to add 58mm filters or wide angle/telephoto lenses. I love it. I would get a G11 now. I heard Nikon has similar cameras.

I find it is a great way to learn how to use DSLR features. Good luck.

I worked mainly with 35 mm until 2 years ago and, at that time, I went with a Nikon D40. It is self explanatory and very easy to use!!! The accessories are many and range from the cheap to the high dollar but definitely worth it.

Canon Rebel for sure is the best for newbies. I never used it because I went from my 35mm to D20 when I started digital professionally. But all the people I know who are starting out started using the rebel and then move on to bigger and better bodies. If you\’re thinking of really going into photography and don\’t want to upgrade every year, try the 50D-Canon. It\’s great to start but it will hold up professionally.

BTW I own a Canon 7D and a Nikon…I use my Nikon all the time but LOVE the images my Canon takes. So crisp and beautiful.

What\’s the best first camera? Very difficult question to answer—hard for you, even harder for anybody else. It\’s difficult in part because, right now, you have quite a few options, and none of them are really bad.

For what it\’s worth, the Technical Image Press Assocation (TIPA) in Europe declared the Pentax K-x the best entry-level DSLR.

It\’s a choice you should consider. The K-x\’s price is below that of cameras with fewer features. The Pentax K-x has shake reduction (a.k.a. image stabilization) built into the body of the camera so you have its advantages with every lens you use, and you don\’t have to keep paying for it as you buy lenses. It has the best low-light, high-ISO performance in its class, indeed, it comes very close to the much higher-end Nikon D90 in that regard. (See the test results at dxomark.com if you are curious about this.) Unlike the low-end cameras from Nikon and Canon (which are otherwise fine) the build of the Pentax K-x is solid. And it\’s small, which for many new users is a big advantage.

Well, for sure a difficult question.. So many companies produces a great amount of beginners DSLRs. The Canon Rebel X2i is a very great choise, and if you don\’t need the HD video capabilities go for a refurbished Rebel XTi (i own one, and is very good and user friendly). The Nikon D40 also a beginners dream, though not compared to the Canon for the price. About the Olympus E-450 you\’ve mentioned, i have a small experience with the E-410 and can tell you it is a very good camera for beginners.. The smallest of all DSLRs (and that\’s important). And BTW, most of the features on it you won\’t use ever.. Good luck!! :)
