Hello Chuckster,
First of all i have worked in a large UK photograhic chain for over 3 years now and there really isn\’t an indefinate answer to the question as it really depends on specific models and features you are comparing. In most terms Canon is by far the better brand to go with. The ixus and powershot range outperforms the Coolpix range in speed, lowlight performance, ease of use and personal opionion -STYLE!.
Canon uses their own Digic 4 proccesor which gets fantastic colour rendition, speed and allows autofocus to hunt the correct focus areas you.
The biggest downsides is some of the entry level coolpix range (nikon) is the sharpness and iso performance. Basically under low light performance the photos taken are coming out with soft focussing and grainy shots as they cannot deal with the low light. Of course this gets better the higher up you go in the nikon range but canon still exceed in higher compact range also.
As far as the company service is concerned canon has a higher turnaround time on repairs and brake less often as they have a higher build quality (these opinions are basded on the repairs we get through our store and company). However both brands are very reliable.
I have used canon in both DSLR and Compact and i am passionate about the technology they produce. I hope this has helped your decision.

I have shot with both Nikon and Canon point and shoots, and honestly the brand made no difference. Make sure the camera has the features that you require. For example if you want a camera to take night pictures, look for a camera with a low minimum armature. Or if you want it for sports, look for a faster shutter. Nikon vs Canon is all in the personal preference. People tend to sway one way or the other, but it is brand loyalty.

I\’ve been a Nikon owner since the days of the original Photomic[-T and curretnly own several collector bodies and lenses, three Nikon F-5s and three Nikon digitals, one converted to infrared b&w.
Most of my original lenses from film cameras still work on my digitals, albeit in manual mode only. Canon, originally Bell & Howell when Americans still manufactured cameras and lenses, has overtaken Nikon to a large entent. Earlier Canon lenses do not work on their current products. That said, both companies make excellent products.
MatSheridan has offered you sage advice. Pick the product that provides the features you want at the price that matches your pocketbook. Both companies offer quality equipment. .
