avoiding burn-out

I am one of those people with a camera that is far smarter than the operator. It’s a D80 and I use it nearly always on auto mode.

My problem? ‘m shooting pictures of plant material for a book, and if there is anything hot in the frame, the plants are too dark, plus the hot spot looks awful. Aside from perhaps a photography class, what can I do?

I do point the camera away, take the reading, then shoot, which gives me the plant but makes the hotspot even hotter. I also try to position better, but also want to take advantage of the polarizer, which means 45° to the sun. Help!

Using Nikon’s 18-200, a dream lens for my kind of shooting.
