Why are my pictures so bright?

I just bought a Canon 7D and all of the pictures I have taken outside seem to have a lot of highlights with a really white sky even when it’s blue. Similarly, when photographin a pond, the water seems to turn out grey and muted while the weeds infront turn out really bright. What can I do to improve this?

Well, first you can add a Circular Polarizer screen (some calls it filter) to your lens, this can eliminates reflections from the pond (just by turning the screen you will see the difference), and also will increase contrast and color saturation (that\’s for your white sky).
Of course, other values you put on your camera are important, where is the light source when you take a picture etc.

Another thing to add, it annoyed me for few days that i didn\’t wrote this..
To get the sky blue\’ you need the sun to be behind you.. so it\’s good to take sky pictures early in the morning or late afternoon with your back facing the sun.. Wide angle lens can help too.. And of cource the Circular Polarizer i\’ve mentioned before..

Increase shutter speed, lower down ISO and get higher F-no to lower down the brightness. or you do as ilangai said by applying CPL filter.
