Generally a medium format camera is preferred for taking portraits, however if the maximum size that the photograph will be printed is relatively small you can use any of the digital SLR\’s available, e.g. Canon 7D
What is equally as important as the camera is the lens you choose, a focal length of 100mm is accepted as the correct focal length for optimising portraits whatever camera you go with, just remember to allow for the crop factor of the particular camera you choose if it is digital.

Steve offers excellent advice. With today\’s high-pixal counts most digital cameras can be used for portrait work. The focal length of your lens should, indeed, be set in the neighborhood of 100mm but you may want to experiment with something from 70mm and up as a basic convention with digitals other than professional full-frame models is add 30% to a given focal length to achieve what 35mm film cameras do,
For example, a 100mm lens on a digital provides approximatrely the same perspective you\’d get with a 135mm lens on a traditional film camera.
What you\’re after is a slight compression of perspective that a zoom lens will give you at the settings Steve has pointed to.

For Fine art portraits I know that some fine art photographers practically swear by larg fomat cameras, but those are quite expensive.
