Macroscopic Lens

A Macroscopic Lens refers to the type of lens used to take close-up shots in macro photography. When a photographer wants to capture the fine details of his subject, he will affix a macroscopic lens to his camera. This type of lens may be interchanged with a zoom lens to capture the same effect in the resulting photo.

Macroscopic lenses are best used to take close-up pictures of nature subjects at a close range. For example, a photographer will use a macroscopic lens to take a picture of the texture of a rock, the fine hairs on an insect or the individual grains of pollen on a flower. However, if a photographer wants to take a close-up picture of a subject that is far away, he should use a telephoto or zoom lens, rather than a macroscopic lens.

When taking pictures with a macroscopic lens, be sure to pay careful attention to the scene’s lighting. Any shadow within the frame of the macroscopic lens will be intensely magnified, ruining your shot.

Macroscopic lenses are generally tools of professional photographers, as these camera accessories tend to be a bit pricier. However, with a bit of practice and experimentation, an amateur can also master the macroscopic lens.
