Vernacular Photography

Vernacular Photography refers to the branch of photography that deals with common, everyday pictures taken by amateur photographers. Photos can only be considered to fit into the category of vernacular photography if the photographer is unknown and the pictures are of normal, everyday subjects.

For example, pictures in a family album, travel shots or pictures taken at a party are some of the most common instances of vernacular photography.

Such shots tend to be taken with a disposable or a simple point and shoot camera, as these types of cameras allow for little shot set up and minimal camera adjustments.

Although vernacular photography is generally part of people’s personal, private picture collections, it is becoming a growing industry in the art world. In fact, many art collectors and gallery owners are featuring more and more displays of vernacular photography in their collections.
