Learn what you can anyway you can. World of information at your finger tips if you are willing to look for it, the internet holds all. Books, magazines, teachers/ professors, check for local clubs, try talking to professionals. And it isn't the camera that makes the photographer, you need to have the eye. I started with a Canon AE-1. Because I used 35mm film, I had to focus and learn a lot before actually taking the shot. Plus gave me the chance to learn and practice the development process. Think about maybe starting with an older model and then working your way up to a DSLR. Good luck

I am assuming you are talking in terms of the professional level. What are you considering "great pictures?" Among my group of friends that are interested in photography, few are in the process of majoring in it, there seems to be a lot more women. My only friend who has started to turn it into a business, is female.
