Hi Jessica1980, I am beginner to and I purchased the Nikon D5000 SLR and teh Nikkor 550200 lens, it's a really good package for a beginner. You just have to read the instructions about the function of the camera, focus and shoot. I have several really good pictures I've taken with it. Not sure of my next step yet, I just want photography as a hobbie,not a job....to me it's a lot more fun when I do it because I want to not because I have to.
