I\'m not an expert either. I went from a Canon S45 to a Canon 350D. I found it overwhelming and that I had a hard time carrying it around (lots of kid gear to haul around in addition). I traded it in for a Canon G9 because it has many DSLR features in a fairly compact point and shoot. You can also add a lens adapter to it to add 58mm filters or wide angle/telephoto lenses. I love it. I would get a G11 now. I heard Nikon has similar cameras. I find it is a great way to learn how to use DSLR features. Good luck.
