If you have a flash that you can change the angle of, then I would point it straight up or even off to the side or behind you. If not, I agree with the other poster, leave it off and just make sure that there is enough light from another source.

Your angle really depends on what you are trying to achieve in your shot. I would definitely shoot from an angle that deemphasizes any features of your subject that are less than flattering, i.e. shooting straight on for someone with a wide body/ face. You can use hair lighting, or have them look toward a light to illuminate the face. Just get creative and take as many photos as you can.

I was having this problem too and my dad (a pro photog) told me that I needed to get my subjects into the shade if possible. He even showed me how to create shade using a car windshield shade (you know the big ones that fold up). If you are shooting in aperature priority, you can set it as wide open as it will go which will distort the background, even if it is much lighter than everything else. Your other option is to fix it in post processing, although it's kind of a pain to do and make it look right...

Check out Scott Kelby's books for some tips on taking (and editing) your photos. He has some great tutorials on his website too, but the fee for membership is a little costly. Most of all, just practice with what you have and take tons of photos. Look at them critically and figure out what you like and don't like about the shots.

I wholehartedly agree with the other two posters. I think that if you are looking to get into this and want a camera that is fairly small and inexpensive, you can look at the higher end Kodak EasyShare line. I started with one of those and mine had a few settings that could be changed once I became more comfortable with composition and such. They are really user friendly and everything is already on it that you need. The downside to this is that you don't have the option to change lenses and if I remember correctly it only has the option to use the on board flash.

I have a Nikon D3000 that I absolutely love! The price can go up to over $600 but if you search around I bet you can get a better deal than that. It is easy enough for a beginner to master, yet takes good enough photos that it can compete with some of the pros out there. Just a great all around camera in my opinion.
