Go to the library and get some basic digital photography books. Read the basics and learn the terminology to impress. Then explain to your parents that you really need a camera (even an old one) to apply the techniques you are learning and play with them to get the hang of it. Try learning to use a computer with no computer. Good luck.

I would go for the D5100, it is very comparable to the D90 with a few upgrades and they are the same price. I have a D3100 and it takes great pictures, however it is a beginners camera. The HD video is a plus, however it is not compatible with a wireless remote. I got it thinking I didn't want to spend a lot when I am just starting, but I already wish I had gotten a D5100.

I will try the aperture priority out, thanks. I practiced yesterday in bright sun with the manual mode and got some good shots. I think we will go later in the day and stick to the shade.
